Discussion

CINEFOGO Network Conference on Social Rights, Active Citizenship and Governance in EU on 16-18Mar09 in BXL

2009-03-16 00:00
The CINEFOGO Network organizes March 16-18 2009 a Conference on Social Rights, Active Citizenship and Governance in EU. The conference is held in Brussels.  After almost four years of joint research, the netw ork will stage a top-level conference where European researchers will meet EP members, EU officials, NGO representatives (EU, national), and the media. The goal of the conference would be spreading the outcomes of research conducted by the CINEFOGO project at the European and national levels of policy making.

The conference will focus on two important topics relevant for all citizens of Europe as well as all European policy makers:

- Social rights and social reality in the European Union
- Active citizenship and governance.

The conference will present CINEFOGO Network findings on the relationships among citizens, NGOs, civil servants and politicians at the European and national levels. It will identify different roles of various actors and institutions, the ways they are (or are not) involved in the decision making processes, and how their actions influence the changing human living conditions – including accessibility of social rights to European citizens.

Governance at the EU level has a big impact the on daily life and working conditions of the Europeans. However, the citizens of Europe mostly do not understand the complexities of EU policy making. Their active participation at various levels of governance differs from one country to another and from agenda to agenda, depending on uneven strengths of particular civil societies, different civic cultures, and emerging new modes of cooperation between private and public actors. There is an important role of intermediate organizations, such as NGOs and the media in nurturing conditions for the activation of European citizens. In general, active citizens’ participation is still a feeble resource in the EU decision making processes.

Information and Communication Technologies Research 2009-2010:

The 2009-2010 work programme of the European Union's 7th Framework Programme will be unveiled at the end of 2008. The work programme will set out the challenges and objectives for ICT research funding for the next two year.

Planning a research project in ICT? Looking for potential partners?

Are you interested in responding to calls for proposals for projects in the field of Information and Communication Technologies? Would you like to meet other people having similar or complementary research interests?

This one-day event is specially designed for you!

The event is designed to help you meet potential collaborators and facilitate the formation of research consortia. European Commission staff will also be present to advise on the specifics of the 2009-2010 work programme, and on the general rules and procedures for participating in calls for proposals.

Advance preparation: use this website to make the most of the Proposers' Day

Forthcoming features on this site will allow prospective participants to present proposal ideas and express interest in those of others in advance of the Event itself. This will be possible using "comment" facilities relating to specific fields of research. Through these comments, participants will be able to view each other's public profiles and establish advance contact through the site's messaging system.

Sustainability is arguably the challenge of our time. There is growing recognition that our current development path is now threatening the natural systems upon which our civilisation ultimately depends. Sustainable urban development requires a new way of doing things – a way which reduces environmental impact while at the same time promoting widespread economic and social progress. The buildings and supporting infrastructure of our towns and cities contribute positively to people’s quality of life but often use materials, produce waste and release CO2 significantly in excess of that which our land, water and climate can continue to accommodate. Many urban centres are still blighted by crime and poverty: poorly designed developments have negative effects on the health, welfare and economic prospects of communities.
Throughout the world urban decision-makers need robust and comprehensive metrics, models and tools to help them assess the extent to which their choices are leading to urban developments that address these issues and contribute positively to sustainable development – a fact recognised at the WCED, Rio and Rio +10 United Nations summits.
Conference aim
Following the outstanding success of our International Conference on Whole Life Urban Sustainability and its Assessment in Glasgow in 2007, we felt inspired to organise a follow-up conference.
This conference will bring together leading international researchers, professionals, tool developers, policy makers and other stakeholders who are involved in the field of urban sustainability assessment to exchange ideas and knowledge on how to meet the assessment needs of urban decision-makers.
Themes
The conference themes are:

World Knowledge Dialogue Symposium, 10-13Sep08 Crans-Montana, Switzerland

2008-09-10 00:00
2008-09-13 00:00

World Knowledge Dialogue Symposium, Crans Montana, Switzerland

The second World Knowledge Dialogue Symposium will be held from 10 to 13 September in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

Under the title 'Towards a modern humanism', two main interdisciplinary themes will be debated:
- collective network knowledge and human individual intelligence: convergences and divergences;
- collaborative behaviour, altruism and conflict: from animal behaviour to economics and prevention of violence.

The invited speakers include renowned researchers such as the philosopher Pierre Lévy (University of Ottawa, Canada), sociologist Karen Cook (Stanford University, USA), primatologist Frans de Waal (Emory University, USA), astronomer Hubert Reeves (University of Montreal, Canada), ecologist Raghavendra Gadagkar (Institute of Science, Bangalore), computer scientist Wendy Hall (University of Southampton, UK), systems theorist Joël de Rosnay (Biotics International), developmental biologist Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard (Max Planck Society, Germany) and geneticist Sir John Sulston (University of Manchester, UK).

Keynote lectures on the relationships between knowledge, scientific enterprise and responsibility encourage participants to frame their contributions in terms of the question: Does a knowledgeable person have additional responsibilities in the 21st century? The interactive workshop sessions which follow then allow participants to pursue specific issues at greater length.
