Uminova Innovation AB is a non-profit organization, located in Umeå, North Sweden. We have
our roots in the late 1960’s at Umeå University. We were a university department at start, but
became limited company in 1998.
Present owners are: Umeå University 50%, City of Umeå 25%, SLU (Swedish Agricultural
University) 13 %, and the County Council of Västerbotten 12 %. They are strategically engaged
in the activities through their work in the company board.
Uminova Innovation currently has 17 employees and is a downright project organization. The
annual turnover is approximately 2,7 mEuro.
The organizations have always upheld a strong focus on innovation issues. Since our work has
been successful and given us a good national reputation, this has also resulted in international
attention in later years, i.e. the Innovation Relay Centre and also the first experiment innovation
project SCRI supported by Interreg. Northern Periphery Project can be accredited for.
Uminova Innovation has a strong connection to the Universities in Umeå and is one of the
nationally selected key actors for working with strategies/activities for commercialisation of
research from the academics by the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems.
Uminova Innovation has made special efforts in the lifescience, we are now for instance
participating in a transnational INNOV 7-project named Transbio, aiming to launch European
life science in North America.
Activities and opportunities for researchers and biotechnology companies in the region have been
combined into BioTech Umeå. ICT, forest technology and plant science are other sector that has
been prioritised in the region.
The company’s activities are focused on innovation development. This entails a complete
concentration on innovation, incubator, development, and technology transfer issues, nationally
as well as internationally. This is especially positive since there are no problems with set-up and
start-up times, which holds for our general innovation development.
